The Gift of the Magi (Henry)
from the Collection « Four Million»
Jim and Della are a young married couple who live in a small apartment and are very poor.
Despite their lack of money, they are deeply in love and always try to find ways to make each other happy.
One Christmas, Della wants to buy Jim a gift but she has very little money. She decides to sell her long, beautiful hair in order to have enough money to buy Jim a chain for his watch, which he treasures. She goes to the market and sells her hair for twenty dollars.
Meanwhile, Jim has been saving up money to buy Della a present. He finally has enough to buy her a set of combs for her hair, which she loves. However, when he gets home, he finds out that Della has cut off all of her hair.
When they exchange gifts, they realize that they have both sacrificed something they valued in order to make the other person happy. Despite this, they are both thrilled with their gifts and appreciate the love and thought that went into them.
In the end, the couple learns that true love is about sacrifice and that the greatest gifts come from the heart, not from material possessions.
